France and Denmark played in the first draw of the World Cup at the Luzhniki stadium as the two teams progressed with Group C, the winner of Didier Deschamps.
France, already assured of a place in the round of 16, will face the dolphins of Group D, while Denmark will face the winners of the group.
Denmark created the first opening after three minutes when Andreas Cornelius took the lead from Martin Braithwaite, who was pressured by a pair of defenders but who saw his penalty kicked out by referee Sandro Ricci.
Four minutes later, the Danes threatened again as Christian Eriksen passed but Simon Kjaer went wide under pressure.
Antoine Griezmann dug a center too high when France came forward, and a quarter of an hour late, France wanted a penalty when Lucas Hernandez tumbled under the challenge of Henrik Dalsgaard .
Ousmane Dembele's center hit Mathias Jorgensen inside the box, the referee deciding that he had not handled it and Cornelius played in a center for Eriksen , who wanted a kick when goalkeeper Steve Mandanda and Hernandez clashed.
The two teams fought to create clear spaces, but when France began to enjoy the majority of possession, Dembele fired a shot and Griezmann shot Kasper Schmeichel from the edge of the box.
Two minutes from the left half, France should have passed but Giroud opened the scoring after Griezmann's control and the layoff created the opening inside the area.
Over time, Nicolai Jorgensen was selected for shooting down Griezmann, and early in the second half, France made the first change, bringing Benjamin Mendy to Hernandez.
Mandanda looked uncertain when Eriksen kicked a free kick in the 55th minute in his penalty area but, after losing the ball, he then brought it back with Denmark to the front.
The France goalkeeper was again in the limelight when he escaped Eriksen's shot from a distance, but he recovered to catch the ball before Cornelius could get there.
Eriksen then sent another effort before Denmark hired Viktor Fischer for Pione Sisto as the hour approached.
France took off Griezmann and introduced Nabil Fekir, who almost made an instant impact when he turned and shot in a shot that skimmed the net on his way wide.
Cornelius was replaced by Kasper Dolberg before, with the last 10 minutes approaching, France took off Dembele and provoked Kylian Mbappe.
Giroud's effort well above the bar summed up a match that had been low on quality and odds, but Fekir – whose introduction had brought a necessary spark – forced Schmeichel into a stop with a another attempt at distance.
Denmark's Thomas Delaney fought off a tough challenge and was replaced by Lukas Lerager as the match ended with hoots from neutral Moscow spectators.
