The Florida Hospital for Children has for the first time secured a place in the US News & World Report's Top Children's Hospital Rankings for its neonatal program.
"The Florida Hospital for Children provides the children and families we serve with the highest quality, most advanced and most compassionate care. This first ranking is a recognition of this unwavering commitment, "said Daryl Tol, President and CEO of Florida Hospital. Florida Central Division of the Adventist Health System, in a news release.
Unveiled Tuesday, the US ranking of the best children's hospitals identifies the top 50 pediatric hospitals in 10 specialties.
Ten hospitals went to the report's honor table, the Boston Children's Hospital, the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the Philadelphia Children's Hospital occupying the first three places.
Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children ranked among the top 50 hospitals in five specialties, making it the highest ranked hospital in Orlando. But he slipped a few places in the rankings compared to last year. The hospital ranks 36th in cardiology, down two points from 2017. It went from 21st to 34th in diabetes care. He lost a place in orthopedics, ranking 34th. He also fell from 36th to 38th place in pneumology. The hospital climbed one point to 44th place in urology.

To be included in US rankings, hospitals must provide detailed data on their services and capabilities. The report identifies measures including mortality and infection rates, clinical data, and best practice compliance to rank the top 50 hospitals in each specialty.
"By having access to the most comprehensive data available to supplement their pediatrician's advice, families are able to make more informed decisions about where to look for quality care for their children," said Ben Harder. in a press release.
A total of 189 hospitals were included in the ranking this year, including seven in Florida, including the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and the Florida Children's Hospital in Orlando. The Children's Hospital of Nemours has not been included in the report.
U.S. News pointed out that rankings are a starting point for families and that high-ranking hospitals are not always the best choice.
"In a specialty, the hospital's performance is judged through a variety of conditions and procedures, so one hospital may outperform another in some of them, but the second could do better in some areas. In the pediatric orthopedic classifications, for example, a hospital might have a particularly busy spina bifida clinic but not treat complex fractures as effectively as another hospital could do, "according to US News. .
