The Knicks enter the free NBA agency in an interesting position. With a new coach in David Fizdale, a young Kristaps Porzingis star, and a mishmash list of veterans and youngsters, the Knicks could really go in any direction they want.

If they wanted to run after the veterans and make a race in the playoffs, they can do it. If they want to win the year and collect assets, they can do it too.
New York is one of many NBA teams capped but that does not mean that the Knicks are helpless in the free agency. They can still do trades and they can give inexpensive contracts to fill the list.
In fact, that's what we should expect from the Knicks this summer. Via The New York Times :
The Knicks chairman, Steve Mills, in a radio interview with Stephen A. Smith of ESPN, announced that New York had not intend to give free agents anything other than a year contracts to maintain maximum financial flexibility for the summer of 2019. The Knicks, however, will be barely alone when he it is about launching short-term offers.
The cap is expected to rise again in the summer of 2019 and the Knicks will be one of the many teams looking to cash in that year. It will probably not have the same kind of power as 2018, but players like Klay Thompson and Kemba Walker should be available this summer. Not to mention that New York will have to spend money to re-sign Porzingis.
Regardless of the Knicks' decision for next season, be it the asset collection or the winning games, just know that it is done in 2019 in mind. This could be frustrating for some fans, but it's a little patience that has not been seen in New York for a while. Maybe it'll pay this time.
