A "Freedom Rally" in Portland, Oregon, coordinated by right-wing group Patriot Prayer, was suspended on Saturday after some of its supporters clashed with anti-fascist counter-demonstrators (antifa)
. The incident took place after 6 pm, when Patriot Prayer members took to the streets after their rally at Portland's Terry Schrunk Federal Plaza, the Oregonian reported.
The organizer of Patriot Prayer is Joey Gibson, a US Senate candidate. reports, adding that the group is based in Vancouver, Wash., located just across the Columbia River from Portland.
Tensions increased as both groups fell asleep, according to the report. Antifa members started lobbing eggs, half empty water bottles and firecrackers. Others in the crowd lit firecrackers and smoke bombs.
The police finally ruled that the rally was a riot, revoked Gibson's permit and ordered the protesters to disperse. Police warned that the non-compliance would result in arrest.
Photos and videos posted on social media showed that some people were hurting.
Police confiscated an indeterminate number of weapons, including knives and chemical sprays. probable cause "arrests, according to reports."
The two groups clashed under similar circumstances in the same region on June 3.
The clash coincided with protests held in several cities on Saturday while Hundreds of thousands of people were protesting against the "zero tolerance" American immigration policy. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
