Netflix gave a series order to "Mixtape", who was previously a pilot competing at Fox for the 2018-2019 season, Variety confirmed.
The series is from Joshua Safran. Jenna Dewan, Callie Hernandez and Madeline Stowe – all of whom played in the rider – will return with Jahmil French, Scott Campbell, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Megan Ferguson and Evan Whitten. Raul Castillo, who was the first male role in the pilot, will have his role revamped while he just booked a recurring role on the Netflix show "One day at a time."
The series is described as a romantic musical drama that resembles the stories of love connecting a diverse and disparate group of people in contemporary Los Angeles through the music that lives in their hearts and minds.
Safran will also be executive producer in addition to writing. Megan Ellison, Sue Naegle and Ali Krug will also be executive producers. Jesse Peretz led the pilot. Annapurna Pictures will be producing in association with 20th Century Fox Television and Fox 21 Television Studios. Netflix commissioned a series of 10 episodes the first season.
Safran previously created the ABC series "Quantico" with Priyanka Chopra and wrote for the shows "Gossip Girl" and "Smash" in addition to serving as a showrunner. "Mixtape" had a strong buzz behind him at the start of this pilot season, but there is a good chance that the resumption will be done at Fox while the broadcaster ordered fewer concerts than in previous years and ordered broadcasts like the "Proven Innocent" litigation and multi-camera comedies such as "Last Man Standing" and "The Cool Kids".
This also marks the latest instance this year of a Fox show that is re-launched on another network or streaming service after being canceled on its original network. Netflix recently took over Fox's "Lucifer" after being canceled after three seasons. NBC has already intervened to save "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" after its cancellation to Fox.
