A woman in her twenties would have lost all her toenails after allegedly receiving a so-called "fish pedicure", a treatment considered by many to be rejuvenating to a person's feet.
Fish pedicure involves nibbling a small fish off the person's feet while they are soaking in a hot water bath or at room temperature. Carps without teeth – which are plant eaters – voraciously feast on dead human skin.
After having fish pedicure, the woman said that her nails stopped growing and started to fall. At first, the woman thought that she could have an onychomadesis, a condition known to have similar symptoms; "Although the mechanism of action is not entirely clear, it is probably due to the trauma of the nail matrix," says Sheri Lipner, assistant professor of dermatology. She said the case could be the first documented case of onychomadese ever caused by fish.
"I do not recommend pedicure of fish for any medical or aesthetic purpose," said Lipner. "In addition to onychomadesis, there are also serious infections associated with pedicure." [19659007] Lipner will not reveal where the woman had the pedicure, but noted that the treatment was banned in at least 10 states, mainly for health reasons.
The woman's nails are likely to come back, but he will take a long time as the nails grow only about one millimeter a month on average, says Lipner.
