Last week, many families in the United States – including the Carriker family in Austin – had news that they were waiting for: The Food & Drug Administration approved the first prescription drug that uses cannabidiol, an oil derived from marijuana. 19659002] The drug, an oral solution called Epidiolex from GW Pharmaceuticals, is now approved to treat seizures in two types of epilepsy – Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome.
The American-Statesman described the Carriker family in 2014 and their use of cannabidiol (also known as CBD oil) to help relieve some of the symptoms of epilepsy from the girl Catherine. At the time, the Carrikers were illegally obtaining oil, and they spoke to the Statesman under the guise of anonymity. CBD oil, said Terri Carriker, mother, has made a remarkable difference for Catherine, who at the time had several seizures a night. "A piece of her, we really got back," she said then.
Since we wrote about the Carrikers, the Legislature passed in 2015 a law authorizing the use of CBD oil for epilepsy. Now, patients with epilepsy with a prescription are able to get CBD oil through two dispensaries that have a license, with one-third expected to go online soon.

CBD oil is however not covered by insurance. Epidiolex, since it is approved by the FDA, could be it.
