Dr. John Ochsner, an internationally known heart surgeon who has dedicated his professional life to improving medicine in New Orleans, has passed away.
He was 91 years old.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. John L. Ochsner, Sr. For over 57 years, Dr. Ochsner has been a consistent presence , larger than life in our hospitals and with our staff and patients. His sphere of influence has extended to New Orleans, generations of doctors and Ochsner colleagues and to the international medical community
. Ochsner spent nearly six decades of his life advancing medical quality in New Orleans and served in many community and civic organizations with which he was associated.
He was a world-renowned heart surgeon who set the tone for modern group practice initiated by his father, Dr. Alton Ochsner. Dr. Ochsner pioneered cardiac surgery by performing the first heart transplant in the South Gulf region in 1970, and four years later implanted a pacemaker in the youngest patient.
He pioneered valvular and coronary surgery. innovation and avant-garde, performing more than 12,000 surgeries and creating more than 300 medical publications.
Although this is a significant and heartbreaking loss, it is also a reason to celebrate a life well lived. We are proud to continue his legacy, to feel privileged to call a friend and we will miss him very much.
Our thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences are with his wife of more than 64 years, Mary Lou Ochsner, his children John Ochsner Jr. (an accomplished orthopedic surgeon at Ochsner) and his wife Lori, Joby Ochsner, Dr. Katherine Isabel Ochsner, and Frank Ochsner; and his sister Isabel Mann (Sis) and his grandchildren, Brooke and Kaelin Ochsner during this period
