The engineers of the companies led by Elon Musk, the billionaire known for his unusual ideas as his aspiration to colonize Mars, were en route to Thailand on Saturday to offer their expertise to help save 12 boys and their football coach The Tham Luang Cave in Northern Thailand
The engineers were sent by Tesla, Mr. Musk's electric vehicle company; SpaceX, its rocket company; and the Boring Company, which specializes in tunneling and construction, said a spokesman for Boring.
There are two or three field engineers in Thailand, and others are on the way. He said company representatives were in talks with the Thai government about how they could help.
On Twitter, Mr. Musk meditated on potential inventions that could help the football team trapped, including a miniature submarine made from a part of an Edgar Choueiri , professor at Princeton University specializing in rocket research, said the submarine idea of Mr. Musk suggested that he imagined that the hollow transfer tube of the Falcon rocket – which helps move liquid oxygen to fuel the rocket motor – would be the proper size to transfer the boys out of the flooded cave.
"I'll never bet against Elon Musk," Choueiri said.
Others were not so confident.
Greg Moore, a regional director for The National Cave Rescue Commission, said that most rescues prompt a series of new ideas that are not necessarily practical. Mr. Musk had suggested a nylon tube that would inflate like an inflatable castle to form an underwater tunnel.
The boys were trapped in the cave for 10 days before a group of cave divers discovered them alive last week. Rescuers are worried about the decrease in oxygen levels in the cavern where they have taken refuge, as well as monsoon rains that could push water levels even higher.

This is not the first incursion of Mr Musk in the emergency aid. As a result of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, which resulted in devastating power cuts, Tesla provided batteries to help keep the lights on.
