Furtado, who appeared on Brazilian television, had nearly 650,000 subscribers on his Instagram account since deleted and an active Facebook page filled with … and-after shots of butt enlargement procedures.

But Niveo Steffen, president of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery, told AFP that he believed "Dr. BumBum" was not entirely legitimate, saying that there was a "growing invasion of non-specialists" in the industry.

Furtado told reporters gathered at the police station Thursday that he was innocent of any wrongdoing. In a video broadcast by Brazil's G1 news portal, Furtado said: "A fatality has occurred – a fatality that could happen to any doctor."

His lawyer, Naiara Baldanza, stated in a statement that "any finding regarding the death of Lilian Calixto and my client's responsibility for this fatality is premature."
