NEW YORK (AP) Pitcher Jacob deGrom's first preference is to stay with the New York Mets.
His agent, Brodie van Wagenen, said this week that if the Mets are not interested in a long-term agreement for the 30-year-old All-Star right-winger, they should consider commercial options.
"Our way of saying, hey, we know what's going on," deGrom said before opening the Subway series on Friday at the New York Yankees. "All these business discussions, it was going to happen anyway, so that was our way of getting ahead."
DeGrom is 5-4 with a big 1.68 MPM for last place Mets, who came in the second half with the fewest wins in the National League.
"I want to win here," deGrom said. "Want to be part of the future." I hope the feeling is reciprocal. "
He has a salary of $ 7.4 million this year is eligible for wage arbitration for two more winters, and then can become a free agent after the 2020 season.
"We spoke with Brodie a bit," said Mets Deputy General Manager John Ricco. "We certainly respect Jacob's position, but we also have an obligation to do what is best for the organization, whether to exchange it, to extend it or to let him play. "
Ricco says the Mets are ready to cover veterans in trading in exchange for minor league prospects.
Closer Jeurys Familia and Inner Field Player Asdrubal Cabrera, both eligible for the free agency, seem likely to be distributed.
