BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – Matt Groening said his new adult cartoon series "Disenchantment" has a feminist component that sets it apart from its previous shows.
He also highlighted the differences between the new project and his previous work, the feature film of the Television Critics Association, which was attended by vocal speakers Abbi Jacobson and Eric Andre
. "The simpsons."
"One of the reasons that" The Simpsons "is what it is, it's because of time constraints," he said. "In this show, we can let him breathe a little more, which I find rewarding."
The series is particularly distinguished by an adult cartoon with a female head. He follows the misadventures of an alcoholic lazy princess named Princess Bean, voiced by Abbi Jacobson, the star of "Broad City", who has everything but one goal
Joined by a personal demon named Luci, played by Andre, and a slovenly elf named Elfo (voiced by Nat Faxon), Bean creates mischief in the realm of Dreamland where she is infamous for her imprudent antics.
"Bean is an anti-stereotypical princess of what we're used to seeing," Jacobson said.
Jacobson and Andre both managed to follow the young and hard-to-win audiences in their "Broad City" and "The Eric Andre Show" shows. The stars shared their stories of growing up watching "The Simpsons" and finding their place with Groening and Josh Weinstein, creators and producers of "Disenchantment."
Weinstein stated that while "Disenchantment" features the established talent of both "Futurama" – which he produced – and "The Simpsons", he redeems boundaries in terms of age and diversity. He said that at least half of the writing team was under 30 years old.
"We like to think we are sensitive guys but we have awesome writing staff," he said. "Just like a cast, it's a good mix."
Groening also cited "Monty Python and The Holy Grail" as inspiration for the series, but said Jacobson's "Broad City" feminist style influenced the show.
"As pro-women like Josh and I, Abbi definitely revived the lines we wrote for her and made them even better," he said.
