Indian authorities arrested one woman and four others after a nine-year-old girl was raped, murdered and mutilated in Kashmir.
Police said the girl's 36-year-old mother-in-law ordered her 14-year-old son and two of her 14- and 19-year-old girlfriends to rape the girl in front of her on August 24.
The woman allegedly orchestrated the attack because she was jealous that the child was her husband's favorite.

The victim's rotting body was found in a jungle in Baramulla neighborhood on Tuesday, 12 days after his father reported his disappearance. An autopsy revealed that his body had been tortured and burned with acid.
"It was found that the mother-in-law had kept a grudge against her husband's second wife and children," said Imtiyaz Hussain, a senior police official, who reported that NDTV.
Hussian said that a 19-year-old man, another of the accused, had killed the preteens with an ax after the group raped her, the BBC reported. He also confirmed that adolescent girls had already confessed to rape and murder.

"They will be sent to a juvenile home and treated according to the Juveniles Act," Hussain said.
"The physical condition and preliminary forensic analysis of the corpses confirmed all these facts," police said in a statement released on Tuesday.
The horror of rape is the second of its kind to occur in the state of Kashmir in the north of the country in recent months. Earlier this year, an 8-year-old Muslim girl was raped and murdered in Kathua district.
In April, the story hit the headlines after two ministers of the Hindu nationalist party Bharatiya Janata (BJP) witnessed a protest against the arrest of the eight Hindu men charged.
