Ten bats found in Lincoln have been tested positive so far this year. The city usually only finds around three or four a year on average.
August is considered the pinnacle of the bats season and, as autumn arrives, Lincoln residents are not yet clear. The influx of these bats rage is a growing concern, especially in older neighborhoods.
"In August alone, we had 337 bat calls," said Steve Beal of Lincoln Animal Control "against 93 the previous month".
Lincoln Animal Control says you should never shoo the outside of the animal as it could potentially have rabies and infect more people. Instead, they recommend finding a container and drilling holes in the top. Then use the container to trap the bat on a flat surface and slide the cover and secure the bat inside.
Officials say that this safe way to contain the animal allows them to test it humanely against rabies.
Now, if you think that a person living in your home or pet has been in contact with a bat, you should be tested.
"Any bat saliva could have entered an eye or mucous membrane or an open wound or open wound," said Steve Beal.
It is important to note that no case of human rabies has been reported since the 1920s.
The animal control is open 24/7 and they will go out and assist as needed.
