A Russian presidential adviser said President Vladimir Putin was planning to visit Japan next June.
Yuri Ushakov told Russian media on Wednesday that the proposed visit would coincide with the summit meeting of the group of 20 in Osaka.
This would be Putin's first visit to Japan since December 2016, when he visited the western prefecture of Yamaguchi and Tokyo.
The presidential aide also said Putin will meet Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Vladivostok, Russia's Far East, next Monday.
They are expected to discuss joint economic activities on the four Russian-owned islands. The Japanese government views the progress of economic cooperation as an important step towards the conclusion of a peace treaty between the two countries.
Russia controls the 4 islands. Japan claims them. The Japanese Government maintains that the islands are an integral part of Japanese territory. He says the islands were illegally occupied after the Second World War.
Abe and Putin should also discuss the international situation, including issues related to North Korea.
Abe will attend the Eastern Economic Forum to be held next Tuesday in Vladivostok.
