FLORENCE, N.J. – Police raided Thursday's home of a couple who raised $ 400,000 online for a homeless Samaritan who allegedly wasted some of the money, including on a used BMW that the investigators took on a flatbed truck.
Citing a "huge public interest" in the case, County Attorney Scott Coffina confirmed in a Facebook message that Mark Amico and Katelyn McClure were under investigation, although no charges has not been filed.
It was the story of a homeless man who spent his last $ 20 to buy gas from McClure when she got stuck on a highway in Philadelphia last year and the couple who found 14,000 people so touched by his kind gesture, they donated to a fund to help start a new life.
The police, with a search warrant, left the couple's home in Florence, New Jersey, about 48 kilometers northeast of Philadelphia, with bags and boxes and the BMW, according to media reports.
The couple's lawyer, Ernest Badway, did not respond to calls by seeing comments on the police investigation. They have already denied any wrongdoing.
The couple is also being sued by Johnny Bobbitt, the homeless person who was to receive donations, which were made via a GoFundMe page.
In court on Wednesday, the couple's lawyer said Bobbitt had received about $ 200,000. But Bobbitt's lawyer said he received only about $ 75,000, which includes the value of a motorhome and a 1999 Ford Ranger.
A judge presiding over Bobbitt's trial ordered the couple to make sworn affidavits Monday on the status of all the money raised, as well as handing over documents. Bobbitt, whose attorney states that he is participating in an addiction treatment program, will also be filed.
Their lawyer said the couple would claim their constitutional right not to testify.
Outside their home on Thursday, a handwritten sign "No Trespassing" was posted.
Chris Fallon, Bobbitt's lawyer, has not responded to a call asking for feedback on the latest development.
The story initially led to appearances for Bobbitt and McClure in national television programs as well as an interview with the BBC. But a dispute over money clouded the relationship.
Mr. Amico stated that Bobbitt had spent $ 25,000 in less than two weeks last year on drugs, in addition to paying overdue bills and sending money back. his family.
The couple also bought a camper from Bobbitt with some of the money and parked it on land owned by the McClure family in New Jersey. But Bobbitt became homeless after Amico told him in June that he had to leave the property.
At a recent appearance on NBC's "Megyn Kelly Today" show, D'Amico said that there remained more than $ 150,000 in donations.
But Bobbitt's lawyer said earlier this week that he had been told that all the money had disappeared.
GoFundMe said that he was working with law enforcement to make sure Bobbitt got all the money owed him. The company also claimed to have contributed $ 20,000 to an account created by his lawyer to assist him during the investigation.
