& # 39; Our presence [at the Senate] Let's hope that the people who made this illegal arrest will think twice, "said Senator Francis Pangilinan.
MANILA, Philippines – Opposition senators Leila de Lima and Francis Pangilinan on Thursday night called on supporters to visit the Senate to prevent "the illegal arrest" of Senator Antonio Trillanes IV.
Several political camps, as well as the media, have received advice that a military court could order the arrest of Trillanes on Thursday night or Friday morning, September 7, although Senate President Vicente Sotto III refused to allow local residents.
After President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the revocation of the amnesty granted by former President Benigno Aquino III to Trillanes, the Justice Ministry did not issue a warrant for arrest to a Makati court on Wednesday, 5 September. Secretary of Justice Menardo Guevarra would hasten the arrest of the opposition senator.
The army insisted that since Trillanes' amnesty had been canceled, he had done his military service and could therefore be tried by a court martial. The documents show, however, that Trillanes resigned from the Philippine Navy in 2007, when he first appeared as a senator, or four years before obtaining the amnesty for having participated in mutinies in 2003 and 2007.
The office of Senator Leila de Lima, herself owned by the Duterte government, has called on supporters and the media to remain vigilant in the face of rumors of impending arrests of Trillanes.
"Please be on standby. We may need your presence in the Senate," De Lima's office said in a statement.
"We are still checking reports, but on-site supporters believe that Senator Trillanes is very vulnerable to an illegal arrest tonight until Sunday, when the Senate is not in session and very few people, "added the Lima office.
In a statement, Pangilinan said, "We call on friends and supporters who value democracy coming to the Senate and show their support for Senator Sonny." Our presence is hopeful that the people doing the illegal arrest will think twice about it. . " – Rappler.com
