Tiger Woods has dramatically avoided the hole in which he often found himself in the early rounds this year by summoning shades of glory passed on Thursday.
Woods came out in 29 en route to a par 62 by eight in the first round of the BMW championship.
His six-nine forward at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Penn., Included four birdies and an eagle on par-5 on the 16th hole. He hit all the greens in regulation and seven of his nine green shots were within 20 feet.
It was the first time that he had surpassed 30 points for nine holes since the championship in 2007. It was the sixth time that he was crossing 30 holes for nine holes in his career.
To be sure, it was an anomaly for Woods in this season back, his entry into the 140th tournament on tour in the first round average of scoring, 71.13.
His only failure came on his 17th hole, the 24-yard par-3 eighth, when he missed the left green and could not get up and down for the par. He made up for it by closing with a birdie at his last hole, the ninth hole par-5.
"I made some putts today, right on the doors at 10 and 11," said Woods. "Shooting 29 on the front nine helps. It was good to have a good ride today and we are leaving early tomorrow so it will be a quick turnaround. "
With solid but barely noticeable results in the first two editions of the FedEx – T-40 playoffs at The Northern Trust and T-24 at the Dell Technologies championship – Woods' expectations in the PGA Tour playoffs were temperate.
But the return of an old friend in his bag – the Scotty Cameron putter that he'd been using for years before spreading it in July – seems to have revitalized Woods.

Playing alongside Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth and from the tenth tee, Woods made three of his first four holes. But the highlight of the front ended up in 16th place, when he picked up the green in two 241 yards with an iron and left his second shot five feet from the hole. He then converted the 5th eagle of the season into an eagle putt to reach the solo mark in five cents.
For good measure, Woods managed the 18th hole (his ninth) to stand out with a score below 30.
Cameron's putter playoff marks Woods' second flat change in two weeks. After winning for the first time the Cameron title or a TaylorMade Ardmore mallet at the QuickenLoans Invitational in July, Woods traded Ardmore for a TaylorMade Juno putter at last week's event at TPC Boston. But in the last round of Monday, Woods took 33 putts and had a number of hits / -1.35, causing the return to Cameron.
UPDATE: Tiger continued his torrid start with a birdie on his 10th hole, to reach seven cents and extend his lead to three shots.
