Veracruz's public prosecutor, Jorge Winckler Ortiz, said the mass grave was found after receiving a tip last month.

The search found 200 pieces of clothing, 144 pieces of identity and personal effects. The evidence showed that the deaths may have occurred a few years ago, he said in a statement.

The authorities would not provide details of what may have happened or where the site is located, given an ongoing investigation.

Veracruz, along with Nuevo León, Guerrero, Jalisco and Michoacán, is one of the states where significant quantities of human remains have been found in mass graves.

Cartels such as Los Zetas, El Cartel del Golfo and Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación are strongly present in these states. It has not been confirmed that these results are related to any of them.

Genetic tests of the remains will be accompanied by databases containing information on missing persons. Officials hope to publish a catalog with pictures of clothes and IDs next week. Winckler encouraged families with missing relatives to report them to the authorities.

More than a year ago, in Colinas de Santa Fe, Veracruz, police found nearly 300 remains in a mass grave.

Non-governmental groups and federal authorities reported that more than 30,000 people were missing in the country
