The Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles collided to kick off the NFL 2018 season on Thursday night, and they virtually replayed their playoff game in 2017 thanks to a loose start and a goal line on arrival.
While the reigning champions of the Super Bowl avoided a week 1 upset By milking the life of "Philly Special" 2.0 and putting their defensive muscles to the test, the Falcons have stumbled across innumerable opportunities to calm the Eagles crowd. Not only did they lose, but they lost almost exactly as they did to finish their 2017 campaign – with a slew of failed attempts from the red zone.
A match of the 2018 season, all of a sudden, the Falcons and the quarter Matt Ryan 2016 do not seem sure to make their own Super Bowl, after all.

That's why John Breech, writer of CBS Sports, has joined Will Brinson for the Friday edition of the Pick Six Podcast (a 30-minute daily podcast on the NFL – subscribe: via iTunes | via Stitcher | via TuneIn | via Google Play) – to discuss the ongoing problems in the Atlanta Red Zone, ask what's going on with Matt Ryan and expect the rest of the games going on for the first week.
Brinson, in particular, was certainly frustrated after seeing the Falcons repeat the mistakes that haunted them in 2017.
"The problem about the off season was, OK, the Falcons moved well last year (but) they were caught in the red zone," he said. "Steve Sarkisian has six to eight months to solve this problem and he did not do it."
Equally worrying, perhaps, was Ryan's performance in and out of the red zone. The newly paid Appellant made only 48% of his throws, launched an interception inside the Eagles' 20-yard line and finished 1-for-9 in that range at night.
"His arm looks like a spaghetti noodle," says Brinson. "He seemed to have made a change this season, he looked terrible."
Breech agreed, suggesting that "on the field, (Ryan) was the game goat for the Falcons".
