Yasiel Puig hit a circuit on his return from suspension and Clayton Kershaw kicked off six strong runs while the Los Angeles Dodgers filled the gap on Colorado Rockies' first place with a 4-2 win on Friday night.
The Dodgers opened a key series of the National League by moving a half-game behind the Rockies, leaders of the division. The teams face two more times this weekend and three more in Los Angeles.
Puig entered the second run for his 16th home race of the season and his first since August 11. He missed the last two games in August to face Nick Hundley of the San Francisco Giants.
Kershaw (7-5) allowed two runs on six hits in six innings with one run and seven strikeouts. He won his 22nd Rocky career win, tied for only one team (Giants).
Diamondbacks 5, Braves 3
Paul Goldschmidt had two hits, including his 33rd home game, and southpaw Patrick Corbin made six solid runs as Arizona did not go to Atlanta.
Daniel Descalso had two runs produced, and Nick Ahmed had two hits for the Diamondbacks, who moved inside 1 1/2 of Colorado's games in the West of the National League. They had lost five of six.
Johan Camargo had two doubles and one circuit, Ronald Acuna Jr. had two hits and a stolen goal and Nick Markakis had two hits for the Braves, whose header in NL East was reduced to 2 1/2 on Philadelphia.
Brewers 4, Giants 2
Jesus Aguilar broke a draw in seven innings with a two-point double and two points, leading Milwaukee to San Francisco.
The bitter struggle allowed the Brewers (80-62) to consolidate their place at the top of the National League wild card race at 1 1/2 at the expense of St. Louis (78-63). Milwaukee also won a half-match at the Chicago Cubs (83-57) in first place at NL Central.

Nola (16-4) conceded three hits and a walk while he scored eight goals as he drew a draw with one of his competitors Cy Young, Washington ace Max Scherzer .
Astros 6, Red Sox 3
Tyler White dominated Houston's second straight three-run run with an RBI single in the eighth, helping to win Boston.
The Astros have extended their winning streak to six games with victory. They were 2-0 in the seventh inning, limited to a shot from the Red Sox's left-back, David Price, who made his first start since being hit on the wrist by an online drive on Aug. 29.

Ramon Laureano started two rounds with home homers and Marcus Semien conceded a two-point home run one-four with Oakland to Texas.
A fourth victory in their last five games allowed the A (85-57) to keep pace with the Houston Astros (88-53) in the American West and the New York Yankees (88-53) in the race to the wild cards of the AL. . Oakland remains 3 1/2 games behind in each pursuit.
Laureano, Semien and Matt Chapman had two points scored each for the A, who beat Texas for the eleventh time in 17 games this season.
Yankees 4, Mariners 0
Masahiro Tanaka launched eight scoreless innings while New York shut out Seattle.
Rookie Gleyber Torres and Andrew McCutchen each have two home runs for the Yankees. New York has played 230 home races this season and is set to hit the Mariners' 267 major league record in 1997, which featured Ken Griffey Jr. and Alex Rodriguez in their lineup.
Tanaka (11-5) allowed three hits, did not beat, and broke a season 10 record to win his second start in September after scoring 0-3 in August. The right-hander improved to 7-0 in eight career starts against the Mariners.
Blue Jays 3, Indians 2 (11 innings)
Kevin Pillar was second on his career career with a win in the 11th inning as Toronto defeated Cleveland.
The Indians had loaded the bases in 11th position against Jake Petricka in one and two balls, but Danny Barnes (3-2) removed José Ramirez on the ground to end the threat.
Brad Hand beat Rowdy Tellez to open the bottom of the 11th, his fourth withdrawal in 1 1/3 innings, and was replaced by Adam Cimber (3-6), who allowed Pillar's 12th circuit of the season.
Angels 5, White Sox 2
Felix Pena launched seven solid runs and Shohei Ohtani managed to lead Los Angeles to a win in Chicago.
Pena (2-4) made seven innings, conceding two runs on seven hits while removing six points and not walking either. Ohtani hit a three-run homer, his fourth in his last three games, to increase his season total to 19, a major league record for Japanese-born rookies.
Prior to the match, Mr. Ohtani told reporters that he would play the season as a batter and that he would decide to have Tommy John operated once the season ended. An MRI examination earlier this week showed that Ohtani had new damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
Rays 14, Orioles 2
Blake Snell became the second winner in 18 major league games with 5 1/3 innings of outstanding heat as Tampa Bay beat four home runs to send Baltimore to their 100th loss.
Snell (18-5) limited the Orioles to two points on five hits. He tied a team record by winning his sixth consecutive start, becoming the fourth launcher in Rays history to go.
He joined Cleveland ace Corey Kluber as the second winner of 18 games. Snell also became the first winner of 18 Tampa Bay games since left-handed David Price scored 20-5 in 2012.
Pirates 5, Marlins 3
Rookie Kevin Kramer earned the title of best player in his major league, and Jordan Luplow followed with two points in the seventh inning to push Pittsburgh's host beyond Miami.
In the seventh game against reliever Tayron Guerrero (1-3), Jordy Mercer began his 28th career double. Two outings later, Kramer made 3-3 with a single in the center. Luplow followed with his third homer, center right for a 5-3 lead.
Josh Bell also hit a two-run homer for the Pirates, who have won four straight games.
Red 12, Padres 6
Phillip Ervin played four innings with two homers, including a tiebreaker from Matt Strahm at the bottom of the fourth quarter, and Scott Schebler hit a grand slam to take sixth place and lead Cincinnati to San Diego.
Right-handed Michael Lorenzen (3-1), who faced the minimum of nine batters while allowing a shot with a strikeout in three scoreless innings, was credited with the win. Strahm (3-4) took the loss of relief.
The start of the match was delayed by two hours and 37 minutes because of the rain.
Twins 10, Royals 6
Eddie Rosario conceded the victory and Ehire Adrianza had three hits and three runs produced as Minnesota ended a five-game losing streak by defeating Kansas City in Minneapolis.
Logan Forsythe scored three points, Jake Cave scored twice and scored two points and Jorge Polanco and Rosario also each have two hits for the Twins.
Salvador Perez hit a three-run homer for the Royals.
