The problem of the Alabama, too numerous, seems to have been solved. According to Pat Smith of The Paul Finebaum Show and Aaron Suttles of The Athletic, Hurts should have straightened the 2018 season.
The exception, of course, would be that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa be injured. Hurts would be ready to play this role, especially since it was his for the vast majority of the past two seasons. Hurts was famous for Tagovailoa at halftime of the 2018 championship game, and Alabama then beat Georgia 26-23.
The new NCAA redshirt rule really benefits Hurts because he can play up to four games this season without burning his redshirt. But that really helps him if he wants to transfer. Hurts is expected to graduate in December 2018, which means that he could play up to four games this season while maintaining his eligibility, his transfer after graduation without penalty, playing for a new school in 2019 and have two years of watch in front of him.
Hurts played briefly in the first game of the season in Alabama against Louisville, going 5-for-9 with 70 passing yards and nine rushing yards in three runs. But Tagovailoa spent most of the game time and coach Nick Saban announced it as starting the second week of Alabama.
