A Connecticut woman was hospitalized after accidentally taking a stick of dynamite for a candle.
Firefighters at Bridgeport responded to a call Thursday night when a 30-year-old woman lit a "dynamite stick" at her home during a power outage, thinking it was a candle. The dynamite would have been left by the former owners of the house.
According to police spokeswoman Av Harris, the woman was rushed to Bridgeport Hospital immediately after the incident. She was later transferred to Yale New Haven Hospital.
"She suffered extreme injuries to one of her hands," Harris said. "She also suffered serious facial injuries."
The unidentified woman, her husband and two children were home Thursday when they lost power after violent storms hit the area. The family reportedly tried to go to Home Depot to buy emergency lighting, but the store was closed.
Returning home, Harris says, "The family remembers that when they bought their home two years ago, they thought they were candles left in the basement by former residents or previous owners."
When the woman turned on the object, it exploded in her hand and blew at least one window into the house. In addition to the trauma to his face, Deputy Fire Chief Michael Caldaroni confirmed Thursday night that the mother of two had also lost several fingers.

Although the husband and the wife's children were present at the time, they were not injured during the incident.
After the blast, the Bridgeport firefighters searched the house and discovered what appeared to be another "dynamic device". The bomb squad of the Connecticut State Police was immediately brought to remove, blow up and dispose of the explosive.
The surrounding houses in the area were also searched as a precaution. No other explosive device has been discovered.

Fireworks and dynamite are illegal in the state of Connecticut. However, Harris said The CTPost no charges will be laid against the family since the explosion was described as a "tragic accident" by the Fire Marshal.
"Since it seems to have been an accident [and] the residents of this house had no prior knowledge that what they had at home were explosive devices prohibited by law, the Bridgeport police would not lay charges as a result of this incident, "explained Harris.
We still do not know why the previous owners had dynamite in their basement.
Police remind homeowners to keep glow stick lighting or battery operated cranks in an emergency. They also advise residents to be aware of any unknown items in their home that appear to be fire related and report them immediately to the local fire department if they are observed.
