A once-used metro station was destroyed when the twin towers collapsed. It finally reopened on Saturday, nearly two decades after the 9/11 attacks. This is one of the last important parts of the World Trade Center to reopen, while Lower Manhattan continues to rebuild what has been lost.
The station on Cortlandt Street on Line 1, located directly below the World Trade Center, has remained unused for the last 17 years – although high A world trade center and the Oculus transport hub.
When the towers fell, parts of the iconic buildings passed through the terminal. "The name of the station refers to its location on the World Trade Center site and its heritage under Cortlandt Street, which existed above the station when the 1st line was opened in July 1918," said the MTA in a statement.
Over the years, project costs have risen from $ 69 million to $ 158 million, reports CBS New York.
Work on the project has just started in 2015, reports the New York Times, as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) of New York has not been able to take control of the site until then. The port authorities of New York and New Jersey kept the station closed while working on the restoration of the area.
The new station is fully accessible and air-conditioned so that metro drivers stay cooler in hot weather, the MTA says. He also presents a new work of art that incorporates texts from the Declaration of Independence and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations of 1948.
The station will also link train # 1 to 11 other subway lines, including the PATH train, according to WCBS 880.
