A beautiful new video shows hundreds of dolphins in a group known as "superpod" that launches along the coast near Monterey, California.
A superpod occurs when several groups of dolphins – smaller social groups of dolphins that live and travel together – come together in a much larger group to hunt together food, Patrick Webster, creator of social media content for Monterey Bay Aquarium . He felt that this superpod could have included more than a thousand dolphins.
The aquarium broadcast a fascinating video featuring dolphins coming in and out of the water to listen to music on Twitter on Wednesday. (The Monterey Bay Aquarium does not prevent dolphins from being captive.)
"There are few more magical things in this world than hundreds of dolphins crossing wild Monterey Bay on a foggy autumn morning," read the legend of the aquarium.
The aquarium identified marine mammals as short-nosed dolphins and noted that the video had been slowed to show dolphins moving at half speed.
It is not uncommon for dolphins to congregate in superpods, but it is rare that people can see these formations so close to the coast.
"It was one of the most amazing experiences to see the water being alive with squeaky and splashing dolphins," Webster told the Los Angeles Times. "They will see you and watch you, and you can see that they are watching you."
