SAO PAULO – The man suspected of stabbing the Brazilian presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro was transferred Saturday to a prison in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul.
Globo TV reported that Adelio Bispo de Oliveira was taken to the federal prison of Campo Grande, the state capital. He stated that he would be held in an isolation wing used for prisoners who might be in danger.
Appeals to the prison administration remained unanswered.
Bolsonaro, a right-wing member of the second poll, was stabbed Thursday at a rally in Juiz de Fora, a town about 200 kilometers north of Rio de Janeiro.
He suffered intestinal lesions and severe internal bleeding before undergoing surgery at a local hospital. He was then transferred to Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo, where doctors said Saturday he was getting better.
"My father continues to improve and started physical therapy sessions," said Flavio Bolsonaro, one of the candidate's sons, on his Twitter account. He posted a picture of his smiling father in a blue blouse, sitting on a chair, mimicking two-handed pistols.
We do not know what drove Oliveira to attack Bolsonaro.
The G1 news portal on Friday released a video of his mobile phone, apparently obtained from the police, where he said he acted according to God's orders.
Although nothing indicates that the stab wounds were premeditated, the Bolsonaro camp tried to blame the left.
"They say that he (de Oliveira) was a lone wolf. That it was an isolated case. This is not the case, "said Eduardo Bolsonaro, another son of the candidate. "At the very least, he was left with a lot of hatred in his heart."
Evangelical pastor Silas Malafaia said on Twitter that de Oliveira was formerly affiliated with the Party of Freedom and Left Socialism, which, like most Brazilian political parties, criticized the attack and called for a thorough investigation .
For Bolsonaro, there will be questions about his physical ability to campaign for the October 7 elections.
"He will probably not go back to the streets during this campaign, so he can not do it, but we can," his son Flavio said in a video posted on Facebook.
The son then tweeted: "Jair Bolsonaro is stronger than ever and ready to be elected President of Brazil in the first round.
A dozen candidates participate in the race for the presidency. If no one wins an absolute majority, the first two of the race will compete in a second round on October 28th.
