According to police in Western Australia, up to five bodies were found in a Perth suburban home.

The dead include women and children. Assistant Commissioner Paul Steele said the incident was "tragic", but that there were no permanent security issues.

He said officers had discovered Coode Street in Bedford after a man attended a regional police station.

The man, aged twenty or so, is in detention. It is not known yet whether the victims were linked.

Mr. Steele described the discovery as "heartbreaking" and said the tragedy would send a boost to the community as a whole.

He said teams of forensic doctors were on the scene and investigators were trying to reconstruct a chronology of events.
