ISLAMABAD: Dr. Arif Alvi was sworn in as the 13th President of Pakistan at a ceremony held at the President's House in Islamabad.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Mian Saqib Nisar, was sworn in Alvi.

Former President Mamnoon Hussain, Prime Minister Imran Khan, Chief of Staff Qamar Army Javed Bajwa, Chairman of the Joint Committee of Chiefs of Staff (CJCSC Zubair Mahmood Hayat, members of the Federal Cabinet, judges and foreign ambassadors attended the ceremony.

Alvi took over Hussain's office, which ended his tenure on Saturday.

The president was elected to the National Assembly as the PTI candidate of Karachi constituency NA-247 in the 25 July polls. He resigned from his seat at the beginning of the week.

Arif Alvi – the newly elected president

Born in 1949 and a dentist by profession, Arif Alvi is one of the founding members of PTI.

Even during his years of study, Arif Ur Rehman Alvi had a penchant for politics. During his studies at De Montmorency College of Dentistry in Lahore, he was an active member of the student unions who were protesting against the then President, General Ayub Khan. Later, in 1979, he decided to run as a candidate for Jamaat-e-Islami, in a provincial constituency of Karachi, his hometown.

The dentist again tried his luck in the political arena in 1996. That year he joined the least known and best known political party of the cricket star, Imran Khan.

Alvi was introduced at the headquarters of the Sindh Provincial Assembly as a PTI candidate for the PS-114 (Karachi) constituency in the 1997 general election, but he remained unsuccessful.

He ran for the seat of the Sindh Provincial Assembly in the 2002 general election as a PTI candidate in the PS-90 constituency (Karachi-II), but remained unsuccessful. He obtained only 1,276 votes in the ballot.

He was Secretary General of PTI from 2006 to 2013.

Alvi was elected a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan for the first time in the 2013 general election on a PTI ticket from the NA-250 constituency of Karachi.

Alvi was the only member of the PTI to win a seat in the Sindh National Assembly in the 2013 elections.

In 2016, he was appointed President of the PTI Sindh Section.

He was re-elected to the National Assembly as a PTI candidate for NA-247 (Karachi South-II) in the 2018 general election.

On September 4, members of the National and Provincial Assemblies elected Alvi President of Pakistan.
