Trump asks Apple to make products in the US to avoid Chinese tariffs

WASHINGTONUS President Trump tweeted Saturday that Apple should manufacture products in the US if it wants to avoid tariffs on Chinese imports, Reuters reported.

The company said Friday the commercial authorities that the proposed tariffs would affect the prices of a "wide range" of Apple products, including its watch, but did not mention the iPhone.

Trump, speaking on Friday aboard Air Force One, said the administration had planned tariffs for an additional $ 267 billion worth of Chinese goods.

Trump tweeted that "Apple prices could rise because of the huge tariffs we impose on China – but there is a simple solution where there would be a zero tax, and even a tax incentive. Make your products in the United States instead of China. Start building new plants now.

Apple declined to comment.

The technology sector is one of the biggest potential losers because tariffs would make imported computer parts more expensive. Apple's AirPods, some of its Beats headphones, and its new HomePod speaker would also be subject to taxes.

"The burden of the proposed tariffs will be much heavier for the United States than for China," Apple said in its letter.
