DUBAI (Reuters) – Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted Sunday the news of Jews in Iran and around the world, as tensions between Israel and the Islamic Republic of Tehran intensify.

"As the sun gives way to the moon, I wish all my fellow Jews and Jews around the world a very happy new year filled with peace and harmony. Happy Rosh Hashanah, "said Zarif in his tweet.

Israel said last week that it has carried out more than 200 attacks against Iranian targets in Syria over the past two years and reported last Monday that it could attack suspected Iranian military assets in Iraq.

Iran does not recognize Israel and warned last month that it would strike US and Israeli targets if it were attacked by the United States after President Donald Trump's security advisor said Washington would exert maximum pressure on Tehran.

Zarif, who has sent similar greetings in the past with President Hassan Rouhani, also tweeted pictures of ceremonies held in Iran's Jewish minority.

The former Jewish community in Iran has grown from 85,000 at the time of the 1979 Islamic Revolution to about 10,000 to 20,000, but it is believed to be the largest in the Middle East outside of Israel.
