The Tesla Model 3 again demonstrated in August that it was the hottest electric vehicle in the United States – and that the traditional Prius hybrid sedan was fading.
Hot as incandescent.
According to our estimates, Tesla sold 17,800 copies of Model 3 in August. Shocked? Of course, this is the highest level ever recorded for sales of a single plug-in electric car in a month, beating the old model 3 mark.
The Model 3 now stands as one of the best sellers of the year without any other rechargeable electric car capable of catching it. The total of the year stands at 55,882. An untouchable figure.

August is significant as it confirms that Model 3 sales released in July (14,250) were not a coincidence.
And that means we are witnessing the passage * of the era of green cars centered on the hybrid. The traditional Toyota Prius hybrid sedan (Non-plug-in) 5,210 – a year-over-year decrease of 13.5% – and some of the Prius hybrids sold in 2012, when 21,111 Prius were sold in August of the same year.
And the Toyota Prius Prime rechargeable hybrid could only collect 2,071 sales in August in the United States
In the United States, General Motors did not do much better, at least in comparison with the staggering numbers of Tesla, with sales of 3,050 Volt (rechargeable hybrid) and Bolt (pure EV). stopped publishing monthly totals.
Nissan Leaf sales totaled 1,315 in August (US), a tiny fraction of the number of 3 models. The BMW i3 registered 418 units sold in August.
Last month, Robin Ren, vice president of worldwide sales at Tesla, said in the Tesla results conference call that the Toyota Prius and Nissan Leaf are two of the top five cars marketed by Model 3.
