Washington offensive midfielder Adrian Peterson became the ninth player in NFL history to reach 100 field career touchdowns. The score came from a 1-yard run in the second quarter of Week 1's game against the Arizona Cardinals.
Peterson got his first match with Washington – and that match came against his former team. With several injuries sustained by other Washington riders, the team relied on Peterson for Arizona and, by the time of the touchdown, had already rushed for 53 yards.
Peterson's career total was close to 99 touchdowns for nearly a year, but he finally made a hat-trick on Sunday. He closed the end of a long trip to Peterson.
Peterson was nearing his 100 th TD since 2016
The NFL's MVP in 2012 has entered the club three times in 2016 three times, but fate had other plans. A knee injury has wiped out all but three of his season, and he's averaged only 1.9 yards per run but failed to find the end zone in his final year with the Vikings.
He was released by the team this season and signed with the New Orleans Saints for 2017 with plenty to prove – but he would not have the opportunity in Louisiana. The Saints' sudden field of action meant that there was little room for raking duty behind Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara. It only lasted four weeks in the south of the NFC before being traded for a desperate Arizona Arizona backcourt.
The future Hall of Famer was ready to tell whoever wanted to listen to him that he did not have the impression. For a moment, it seemed like he was right. He broke out with 134 yards and two touchdowns against the Buccaneers in Week 6, but failed to find the final zone for the rest of the season. He was injured in December due to a neck injury and was released in March.
Peterson remained a free agent until August, when wounds ravaged Washington's backfield and Jay Gruden brought him for a training session that soon led to a signing.
When that places Peterson in the NFL records
Peterson's total of 100 touchdowns tie him to Shaun Alexander and Marshall Faulk for seventh place all-time and place behind just six Hall of Fame members.
By reaching 100 touchdowns, Peterson has had Barry Sanders' career touchdowns. The great Dallas Cowboys player, Emmitt Smith, who ended his career with the Cardinals, holds the all-time record with 164 touchdowns and a record 18,355 yards per run.
Peterson also tops the list of rushing yards after passing Marshall Faulk and Jim Brown in his first game in Washington.
Peterson becomes the seventh player to run for at least 12,000 yards and 100 touchdowns. The other six – Smith, Walter Payton, Tomlininson LaDainian, Jim Brown, Marshall Faulk and Marcus Allen – are all in the Hall of Fame. One day, Peterson will join them too.
