The five people found dead in a house in the northeastern suburbs of Perth were two-year-old twins, revealed their three-and-a-half-year-old sister, their mother and their grandmother.

The bodies of girls and women were discovered at home in Bedford yesterday after a man, over 20 years old, went to a WA regional police station.

The man remains in detention but "no charges have been laid for the moment," said a spokesman for the police.

The names of the victims have not yet been disclosed.

The relationship of the victims with the incarcerated man has not yet been confirmed.

Officers continued to work all night at home as part of their investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the murders.

Police said yesterday that the investigation was still "at a very early stage", but described the incident as a tragic event.

"It's tragic not only for family and friends, but also for first responders who are forced to witness such scenes," said police commissioner Paul Steel's assistant.

"It sends a wave through the community of Western Australia."

Homicide detectives are conducting the investigation.

WA's third massacre in six months

This is the third time this year that WA police are facing what appears to be a mass murder crime scene.

In May, seven people were found dead after a house shooting in Osmington, near the tourist town of Margaret River in southwest Washington.

Katrina Miles and her four children were found dead in their beds and her mother's body, Cynda Miles, was found in an adjacent property with gunshot wounds.

The children's grandfather, Peter Miles, was also found shot dead and three firearms belonging to him were found on the property.

It was the biggest shooting incident in Australia since the Port Arthur Massacre in 1996, when 35 people were shot dead in Tasmania.

Then, in July, a mother and two children were found dead in a house in Ellenbrook, north of Perth.

The woman's son, Teancum Vernon Petersen-Crofts, alerted the authorities after entering a nearby convenience store, where staff called the police.

When the officers went home, they found Michelle Petersen and her son Rua dead and her daughter Bella in critical condition.

She died later on the way to the hospital.

Mr. Petersen-Crofts has been charged with three counts of murder and returned to the secure wing of Graylands Hospital while awaiting his next appearance.
