Seven people, including two British tourists, were wounded Sunday in Paris after being attacked by a man with a knife and an iron bar, police and other sources said.

A source close to the investigation said the suspect was arrested and is an Afghan national.

"Nothing at this stage shows signs of terrorism in these attacks," the sources said, adding that the attacker had targeted "strangers in the street."

Of the seven wounded, four are in critical condition, police said.

The incident occurred just after 23:00 (21:00 GMT) on the banks of a canal northeast of the capital.

A security guard at one of the two cinemas on either side of the Ourcq Canal said he saw a man who had already assaulted people chased by two other men who were trying to arrest him.

"He had an iron bar in his hand that he threw against the men who chased him, then he pulled out a knife," he told AFP.

A judicial investigation was opened for attempted murder, according to a judicial source.

Police said that four of the seven people injured during an attack by an armed man with a knife and an iron bar are in critical condition.
