A Texas company has revealed that more than 8,000 gallons of jet fuel have spilled into a river in the town of Decatur, Indiana. according to at Time. The Buckeye Pipe Line, based in Houston, indicates that the fuel was found in the St. Marys River, about 100 miles northeast of Indianapolis.
The company says the detection of a pressure problem immediately ended the line on Friday night. Now the focus will be on the cleaning process that the Decatur mayor, Kenneth L. Meyer, could take weeks. Local officials report that floating dams have been placed in the river in the hope that this would help contain the fuel as it is sucked into the surface of the water.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency has detailed its response to the jet fuel incident, including air monitoring in neighborhoods and businesses located near the river. The EPA also plans to monitor further downstream locations to make sure the water quality is where it should be.
