ROME – Health authorities in northern Italy are investigating whether bacteria in the water cause an epidemic of pneumonia that affects more than 100 people.
The Brescia public health authority issued a general notice over the weekend that residents take basic precautions, such as changing water filters or letting the water run for a while before to use it. But the opinion pointed out that the water of the nine most affected cities was drinkable.
Officials took water samples and conducted epidemiological tests, the results of which were expected in a few days. According to reports in the press, some 150 people in Brescia contracted pneumonia, although the head of the city's health authority, Dr Carmelo Scarcella, said the number of new cases had decreased.
