1. Josh Allen focuses on the preparation
Rookie quarterback Josh Allen was not supposed to see the pitch at all during the Buffalo Bills 2018 regular season game. However, when the Bills found themselves two or three times early in the second period, they changed their plans.
Allen took the reins of the Buffalo offense 11 minutes from the end of the third quarter. The 22-year-old has completed six of his 15 passes for 74 yards. He also picked up 26 yards on the floor. Allen orchestrated the only attempt to score Bills, a series of 12 games in the third quarter that allowed Stephen Hauschka to score.
Allen described what it was like to take his first NFL shots after the match ended. Although he admitted that participating in a 40-0 match was not ideal, he realizes there is still a lot of football to play.
"I went there, and it was not the most desirable situation, but my job was to go out and play games," Allen said. "It's only a game. It's only a loss. We have 15 more to play.
Head coach Sean McDermott said he would review the tape before saying if Allen would continue to play his backup role. The rookie is not, however, focused on that. He will continue to make sure he is ready when his number is called.
"It's not my call," said Allen. "I'm just going to work hard and be ready when they call me."
Although Allen would obviously have liked to see the Bills leave Baltimore with a win, he did not lose confidence in his team.
"It's a resilient team," Allen said. "We will learn what we can and go ahead. I will continue to do what I can to get better and be as ready as possible.
2. Team Captains Analyze How Bills Can Bounce Back After Sunday's Defeat
Losing in the NFL, no matter the score, is never ideal.
However, the NFL's schedule is long. Although all the teams hope to succeed the season with a record of 1-0, to give up the first game of the season is not the end of the world.
For the Bills, their opening game of the regular season was not pretty, but they are not going to let him set their season.
After the team's defeat against the Ravens, defensive tackle Kyle Williams explained how he and his teammates will react.
"Everyone has to look in the mirror and ask what I can do better and make that choice," Williams said. "We must all make this decision. The only way to improve is to go back and learn from it and go to work. I think we have a group of guys who are not afraid to work. They will tackle the day and challenge themselves, and we will get better. "
A 13-year-old veteran, Williams is one of Buffalo's leaders on and off the field. He is extremely respected by his teammates, which is why they have elected him as one of six team captains for the 2018 season.
Running back LeSean McCoy was also elected captain. After the disappointing start to the season, McCoy spoke of reacting to the loss as a leader, stating that no one will be retained in the thought process.
"The first thing I will say to everyone is that there is no finger here," McCoy said. "We will watch the movie and make corrections. It's early in the season. We only lost one match. We still have a lot of games.
3. Rookie Advocates Show Talent in Game Creation in the NFL's Beginning
While the first game of the Buffalo season was not played as many had hoped, rookie Tremaine Edmunds and Harrison Phillips gained valuable experience in Baltimore.
At just 20, Edmunds became the youngest linebacker of the Super Bowl era when he left for Buffalo on Sunday. He had seven tackles, two pass deflections and one bag. Just a few games after taking quarterback Joe Baltimore down, Edmunds forced a fumble. The ball was recovered by Matt Milano and put the Bills in a strong position.
Phillips recorded four tackles, including two for loss.
Another rookie, cornerback Taron Johnson, saw playing time at the nickel position, recording two tackles. He left the game in the second quarter with a shoulder injury.
