Collegiate Football Power Rankings: Georgia and Oregon Make Great Moves When Michigan State Slides

It's early, but it's not a surprise either.

The young season is set to be the most explosive in history. In the first two full weeks, the teams averaged 32.8 points per game. That would erase the record of 30.08 points per team in 2016.

There is still a long way to go, but all the indicators are there. There are already two 1,000-yard passers in K.J. Carta-Samuels of the State of Colorado and Cole McDonald of Hawaii. Jonathan Taylor of Wisconsin is poised to challenge Barry Sanders' (2,628) season record. (If he continues in this direction, Taylor will reach 2,587 yards.)

Twelve teams averaged 50 points per game. The last teams to have done this on a full season were Florida State and Baylor in 2013. However, you will not find Noles or Bears in this week's Power Rankings.

You'll find the big snowmobile in Georgia, two places in fourth place after blowing up South Carolina. Alabama holds first place two weeks later. This is not a surprise either.

You will also find the SEC and Big Ten with five teams each. Arizona State is in the power ranking for the first time in recent memory. Not bad for a guy (Herm Edwards) two games in his rookie season as a head coach of the university.

While we are there, it is worth mentioning these unrepresented teams here:

  • Chip Kelly lost consecutive college games in one season for the first time in his career. UCLA has 38 points in two games. Kelly's Ducks in Oregon has scored 40 goals in 53 games.
  • Kevin Sumlin is past and present. His former team (Houston) whipped his new team, Arizona, 45-18. He is now 0-2 this year. This is a first for Sumlin as head coach. Arizona has not been without a win in the first two games in 37 years.
  • Kansas is not in a Hail Mary of this list, but the Jayhawks deserve to be mentioned. The longest run of FBS Roads (nine years!) Resulted in a 31-7 KU win at Central Michigan. Call quarterback Peyton Bender "Mr. Reliable".
  • Hawaii became the first FBS team to start 3-0 this season with a 43-29 win over Rice.

Let's take a look at the latest power rankings.
