A Cullman County company issued a voluntary booster of eggs following an investigation into an outbreak of salmonellosis that occurred in July.
The Alabama Department of Health and the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries are currently investigating an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness in a group of people who participated in a health event. restoration on July 30th.
The report comes from the West District of ADPH, which covers the counties of Lamar, Fayette, Walker, Tuscaloosa, Sumter, Greene, Hale, Perry, Bibb, Chilton and Pickens.
According to an official from ADPH, the event was organized by a restaurant. Of the 17 people who attended the event, 14 became ill and two confirmed the Salmonella Enteritidis infection. Most of those affected have fully recovered.
A survey shows that people who ate undercooked food made with eggs were almost four times more likely to become ill than those who did not eat these foods. Authorities said the eggs were likely from Gravel Ridge Farms in Cullman County. The company sells primarily to restaurants and stores in Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee.
A similar survey is underway in Tennessee, an official said.
Gravel Ridge Farms "was informed and cooperated with the investigation," officials said in a press release.
On Saturday, Gravel Ridge Farms launched a voluntary recall of its eggs and stopped distributing to retailers and customers.
Salmonellosis, caused by the bacteria Salmonella, is usually acquired by consuming raw or undercooked eggs, poultry, dairy products and meat. Symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, vomiting and abdominal cramps usually last for several days.
People at risk for serious illness include children under 5, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.
To prevent salmonellosis, eggs and meat should be cooked thoroughly. Those who prepare food should wash their hands before, during and after food preparation.
