Matt Adams hit a three-run homer in an eighth round last Monday to push the St. Louis Cardinals to an 8-7 victory over the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates.
Led at 6-4, Matt Carpenter started the eighth against reliever Edgar Santana (2-3) with a walk. Jose Martinez singled out before Adams sent his 21st circuit to the right to make 7-4. Harrison Bader led the winner later in the heat with a sacrifice flight.
The Pirates finished 8-7 in ninth place on Josh Bell's RBI double.
Starling Marte, Colin Moran and Josh Harrison drew for the Pirates, who had won five straight games. Pittsburgh also led 4-0.
Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright, who made his first start since May 13 after an elbow injury, allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings, with three strikeouts and no wins.
John Brebbia (2-3) started an eighth without goal. Carlos Martinez abandoned the race in the ninth but recovered his third stop.
Hacker Trevor Williams allowed four runs and six hits in five innings, with six strikeouts and no wins. Williams had given four points in his previous nine starts.
Moran hit his ninth round, a solo shot at two against the center-right, in the second.
The Pirates fired three more in the third. Williams chose. A little later, Marte sent his 19th circuit for a 3-0 lead. Bell and Francisco Cervelli chose, and Dickerson followed with a basic shot of the RBI for a 4-0 advantage.
St. Louis tied it to the fourth. Carpenter opened with his 40th double. Jose Martinez singled out. A stroke later, Ozuna drove to Carpenter with a base shot. Martinez and Ozuna scored on Paul DeJong's double to make 4-3. Kolten Wong chose and Bader's sacrifice brought Dejong home.
Harrison led the sixth with a center circuit, his eighth, to put Pittsburgh in the lead, 5-4. Later in the round, Adam Frazier added a simple RBI to make 6-4.
