Suicide bombing in Afghanistan: 22 dead near the border crossing of Pakistan

KABUL (Reuters) – A suicide bomber in Afghanistan killed at least 22 people during an attack on a demonstration on the highway between the eastern city of Jalalabad and the main border post with Pakistan. Tuesday officials from the province of Nangarhar.

23 people were wounded in the attack, said the spokesman of the governor of the province, Attaullah Khoghani.

Sohrab Qaderi, a member of the provincial council, said at least 45 dead and wounded had been taken to local hospitals, adding that the toll could rise.

Local officials said the attack targeted a rally to protest against a local militia commander and hundreds of people were present during the blast.

Nangarhar province, bordering Pakistan, was one of Afghanistan's most volatile regions this year, with a series of suicide attacks and attacks on the provincial capital, Jalalabad.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. The province has been one of the main bastions of Islamic State fighters since the beginning of 2015.
