An 18-year-old man was shot dead Tuesday afternoon by an unknown assailant on the campus of a high school in North Las Vegas, police said.
Filming took place around 2:40 pm near Canyon Springs High School where students were participating in athletics or other extracurricular activities, said North Las Vegas Police spokesman Eric. Leavitt.
Police found an 18-year-old man behind the fencing of a baseball field, reported the Las Vegas Review newspaper. The teenager was shot and wounded. Police recovered a weapon at the scene, according to the newspaper.
The police would not disclose details of how the victim was shot or the number of shots. The authorities were trying to determine if the teenager who had been shot was a high school student, Leavitt said.
The victim, whose name was not disclosed by the authorities, was taken to the University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The authorities had not identified a suspect in the evening of Tuesday and were interviewing between 40 and 50 students, Leavitt said.
The school came to a stop immediately after the shooting. Police searched the classrooms and hallways and gathered the students in a school gym, Leavitt said.
According to Leavitt, several hundred people have called 911 to report the shooting at the school serving more than 2,700 students and is surrounded by homes. The school is part of the Clark County School District, which includes schools in Las Vegas and Henderson.
