Health officials in New Mexico warn clients who have received a facial on a vampire in an Albuquerque spa to get tested for HIV and hepatitis, after a person has been infected.
The New Mexico Department of Health immediately closed VIP Spa after the client reported the infection. The NMDOH investigated the spa on Friday and found that their injected treatments, including vampire facials, could spread blood-borne infections such as HIV and hepatitis B and C.
Vampire facials use the customer's own blood drawn and re-inserted with a micro-needling to refresh facial skin.
"It is very important that anyone who has received a facelift or other vampire injection service at the VIP Spa in May or June 2018 goes to the Midtown Public Health Office for free lab tests and advice. and confidential, "Lynn Gallagher, NMDOH's secretary firm, said in a statement.
Dr. Michael Landen, epidemiologist of the NMDOH, said he was alarmed by the way VIP Spa stored, handled and eliminated the needles.
"This is disturbing because if the needles are not handled properly, you could potentially increase the risk of a blood-borne infection," Landen told KOAT News.
Luly Ruiz, owner of VIP Spa, said they only used disposable needles.
"I open them in front of my clients every time they come," she told KOAT.

Ruiz works with NMDOH and wants his clients to take advantage of the free tests.
"I want everyone to be safe, everyone is happy and know they have nothing," she said.
PEOPLE has contacted VIP Spa for more comments.
Kim Kardashian experienced a vampire facial treatment in 2013, but said the procedure was uncomfortable because she was pregnant with her son North at the time and she could not get the usual numb treatments.
"Before I had surgery, I found out I was pregnant, so I could not use a numbing cream or painkiller and both are suggested," she said at the time. "It was really hard and painful for me."
