In one tracking of two cases of imported monkeypox Nigerian authorities (Nigerian Disease Control Center – NCDC) reported working with the UK Public Health Agency; Public Health England (PHE), affected states' public health departments and other partners in Nigeria to investigate these cases.
NCDC has also worked closely with the country's states to strengthen monkeypox surveillance, detection and case response.
A technical working group coordinated by NCDC and composed of partners from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the US Centers for Disease Control (US CDC) and other agencies meets weekly to ensure coordination.
Since the re-emergence of Monkeypox in Nigeria in September 2017, NCDC has continued to receive reports and respond to cases of the disease from states of the country. Between September 2017, the start date of the epidemic and August 31, 2018, 262 suspected cases were reported in 26 states. Of these, 113 were confirmed in 16 states with seven deaths. The largest number of cases have been reported from states in the south-south region of Nigeria.
