Russell Westbrook underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Wednesday, a procedure that will likely cause him to miss the entire preseason and may put him out of business for the first regular season games of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Westbrook will be re-evaluated in four weeks and the Thunder will open the season on Oct. 16 against the Golden State Warriors.
If Westbrook is released after four weeks, he will be available to play in the Thunder's opener against the Warriors, but there will obviously be no rush to bring him back to the ground.
Westbrook experienced some knee stiffness over the past week during individual training while preparing for training camp. He chose to have a standard scope as a preventative "maintenance" procedure rather than potentially dealing with problems throughout the season.
Although the schedule is not ideal with the opening of the Thunder training camp on September 25, the team does not see the situation as a source of concern, and no problem should be follow the procedure.
Following a collision with Patrick Beverley in the 2013 playoffs that resulted in a meniscus tear in his right knee, Westbrook underwent three knee surgeries in nine months. Four and a half years ago the right knee was operated on. Westbrook has fully recovered to win an MVP and an average of three consecutive doubles.
Westbrook, 29, has a career average of 23.0 points, 6.6 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game in 748 appearances.
