Jabari Bird of Celtics appears in court on charges of domestic violence, prosecutors reveal details of alleged incident

Jabari Bird, the second-year winger of Boston Celtics, was arrested last week after a domestic violence incident in Brighton. After being "kept" at St. Elizabeth's Hospital after the incident, Bird appeared in court Thursday morning to be prosecuted.

Police said the incident occurred in the apartment of Bird's girlfriend. Following a dispute between the two, the prosecutors say that Bird "attacked the victim for several hours". Via CBS Boston:

Boston police said Bird was involved in an incident that occurred on September 7 in his girlfriend's apartment in Brighton.

Prosecutors allege that Bird strangled his girlfriend, a student, to the point that she lost consciousness for a time. The police stated that she had locked herself in the bathroom and that at one point she was hiding under a bed.

Bird attacked the victim for several hours, prosecutors said, sometimes throwing her against a wall.

The Celtics issued a statement following Bird's appearance:

More importantly, our thoughts accompany the victim of this incident. The Celtics organization deplores any form of domestic violence and we are deeply disturbed by the allegations against Jabari Bird. In accordance with the Domestic Violence Policy in the NBA employment contract, matters of this type are dealt with by the league office and not by the team. The team will have no other comments for the moment.
