A policeman from Cicero was shot dead Thursday night near the exit of I-55 Avenue on Cicero Avenue, say the investigators.

Due to the ongoing investigation, Cicero Avenue is closed between 39 Street / Pershing Road and 47th Street. The ramps to and from Cicero Avenue and I-55 are also closed.

"Cicero came out of I-55, shot at me, shot at me several times," said officer Luis Duarte on the radio, calling his own injury on Thursday. evening.

Cicero's police said it was part of an attempt to stop traffic on the Stevenson that led to a shootout.

According to the investigators, the officers were trying to pull a car on which California plates had been stolen.

Officials say that Duarte, 31, has received four bullets in the leg, stomach and twice in the arm.

Cicero's police said that after Duarte's shooting, the suspect ran away and started shooting at another officer who was trying to sue him.

"We were lucky enough to have a citizen on the street carrying a hidden briefcase and he also fired with this offender who was hit once and taken to the Cook County Hospital. Chlada said.

It happened just after 5 pm near Cicero and Stevenson during peak hours.

The Chicago Police and the Illinois State Police have all contributed to the response and are now taking over part of the investigation.

"The Chicago police are taking care of the criminal aspect of this investigation.The Illinois Police Public Integrity Working Group is taking care of the officer's shooting," said Sgt. Rocco Alioto.

The Chicago Police Service handles the criminal investigation and the Illinois State Police's Public Integrity Bureau will look after the appearance of the incident related to the shooting.

Cicero's officials say that Duarte has been on force for four years. The last we heard that he was in surgery at Mt Sinai Hospital.

The suspect is in serious condition.

No other injuries have been reported.
