Hurricane Florence is approaching the east coast of the United States and is expected to result in catastrophic floods, high winds and a deadly storm surge and rains in North and South Carolina. As a result, GM and Tesla have remotely activated functions in their cars that could be useful during an evacuation.
As was the case last year before hurricane Irma, Tesla temporarily activated Supercharging on older cars that were not activated at the time of purchase, and unlocked additional battery capacity on certain vehicles ( models S and X 75kWh batteries). A Tesla owners club for the "Triangle" region has collected relevant information for potential evacuees, and said owners should see a notification on their screen about the change.
For GM, it has activated OnStar Emergency Assistance for owners of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles with built-in functionality. Its representatives will handle overflow calls to the Red Cross, while pressing the button on the car will give access to people who can help in the following cases:
- Real-time routing information for those who need to evacuate or navigate disaster areas
- Assistance in locating vital resources such as hotels, gas, food, water or medical supplies
- Free hands-free calling minutes to connect with your loved ones
- Wi-Fi, if downloaded to the vehicle, to keep people connected and informed during the storm
- Communication with first responders so that they can help locate vehicles and help them before they arrive
