President Donald Trump may have supported the boycott of Harley-Davidson over the motorcycle manufacturer's decision to transfer some of the production abroad, but the secret services are not involved.
As reported for the first time by Roll Call, the Secret Service released earlier this week a notice seeking quotes from motorcycle dealers for a Harley "with police gear accessories".
The dispute between Trump and Harley stems from the president's tariffs on European steel and aluminum, which triggered retaliatory tariffs on a range of targeted products, including Harley-Davidson motorcycles. In response, the company announced that it would move production overseas for pigs destined for the European market, in order to "maintain a viable business" in that country. The boycott of Harley motorcycles in the United States would therefore only concern pigs manufactured in the United States.
Like many other business decisions in these hyperpolarized times, Harley 's decision and Trump' s anger provoked a split reaction among those who considered the company 's decision unpatriotic and unwelcome. those who did not like the president too much. the company should and should not manufacture its products.
Trump certainly did not stop there. He wants Apple to manufacture iPhones in the United States rather than China, and so does Ford and its Focus Active, even though Ford has explained that this decision would have no financial meaning.
The secret service, which protects politicians such as Trump, told CNN that its technicians were already trained to serve Harleys, and that its sidecars were designed to fit the brand. The purchase of another brand of bike would be so much more expensive.
