KAUFMAN, Texas – Kaufman County Jail released a video Thursday of the Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger CBS Dallas / Fort Worth reports booking booked three days after firing Botham Jean in his own apartment.
According to court documents, Guyger, 30, took his apartment on his own and thought he had met a burglar. Guyger is out of jail for $ 300,000 bail, but Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson is bringing the case to a grand jury.
At one point in the video, Guyger leans over and puts his face in his hands before recomposing himself.
A lawyer from Jean's family said that a police statement immediately shows the investigators asked for evidence to discredit the victim. "They immediately started trying to get it dirty," said Lee Merritt.
An affidavit from the police shows that agents seized 10.4 grams of marijuana and a marijuana mill in Jean's apartment. Merritt said the search warrant indicated that investigators were immediately looking for props for the drug, according to reports from CBS Dallas / Fort Worth.
Guyger said the door was "ajar" and inside noticed "the interior of the apartment was almost completely dark".
"To hear that his door was open, he would never do – and turn off the lights – he would never do that," said Allisa, Botham's sister, to Omar Villafranca of CBS News. "He was like me, he does not like darkness."
The family says Botham has placed a red carpet in front of his door to distinguish his apartment from the others.
"He let everyone know that it was mine – that's my red carpet," Allisa said.
Earlier Thursday, friends and family gathered for the Thursday funeral of Jean. Hundreds of people were sent to the service in the honor of the life and legacy of the 26-year-old man. Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, Bishop T.D. Jakes and Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall were scattered among the group.
After the funeral, religious leaders in the region expressed their indignation at the murder. Sammie Berry, former and former minister of the John Church Chair, says the family can not rest until justice is done and that Guyger is punished "to the fullest extent of the law". He described Jean's death as a tragedy that could have been avoided and said the group wanted to know why Guyger had not been fired.
He says that they "can not let Bo become another statistic".
